Tuan Lam
It was New Years Day in the middle of the Vietnam War. Tuan Lam was born in the middle of his native country’s biggest military conflict. It was a time of strife when no one could’ve predicted what would become of the young child of war. Lam stayed in Vietnam long past the war’s end, but eventually he left for North America, landing in Ontario, Canada. His only goal was to make enough money to support his wife and children. Whatever was left over, he would send back to his remaining family in Vietnam.
Although there are many success stories among the Vietnamese émigrés, finding and keeping work is not as easy as the fairy tales make it seem. Lam worked general labor jobs, one after another. It was a volatile industry and one that was prone to layoffs. After what seemed like a never-ending line of dead-end jobs, Lam went back to school to earn his high school diploma. He succeeded and set his eyes on business school. The only problem was, he needed money and he didn’t have it. When a friend offered him a job dealing in a card room, he took it. The problem: he had to serve as a prop player when the games got short. That meant he had to learn how to play poker.
Many games and several books later, Lam was a poker player. He started playing on PokerStars, specializing in short-handed games. Before long, he was making a living playing poker. His wife was able to stay home with their children and he was sending money back to his family in Vietnam. Though he played in poker tournaments with some success, he considered himself a cash game specialist.
Fast forward to the 2007 World Series. Lam made a storybook run to the final table of the Main Event and finished in second place for a life-changing $4,840,981. Now, Lam is a member of the esteemed Team PokerStars. You’ll find him continuing to play on PokerStars and competing in tournaments all over the world.
