Steve Paul-Ambrose

2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Champion

Though unheard of on the professional poker tournament scene before 2006, Steve Paul-Ambrose exploded onto it while winning the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, a World Poker Tour event. For his efforts, the business and science student from the University of Waterloo in Canada won more than $1.3 million dollars. He won his seat in the tournament after investing only $110 in satellite tournaments on PokerStars. Though he is continuing his studies at University, he now plays in some of the world's largest poker tournaments for Team PokerStars. Paul-Ambrose had only been playing poker online for a couple years at PokerStars before winning his seat.

2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure

Competing against over 700 entrants, including many professional poker players, Paul-Ambrose began the 2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) as what many would call "dead money". The field also included many other players who qualified at PokerStars, as they are the main sponsors for this World Poker Tour event. Steve qualified in the first $650 PCA satellite tournament he competed in, after winning his way into it from a $22 turbo satellite. His prize package included the $8,000 tournament buy in.

On his very first hand of the Caribbean Adventure, Steve was dealt a pair of Queens. This was a sign of good fortune to come as he managed to work his way through the entire field. He ended up playing heads up against Brook Lyter, another PokerStars qualifier. Here is how the last hand of the tournament was reported on the PokerStars Blog:

BLINDS are $40,000/$80,000/$10,000

The players see a flop of J92 with two spades. Brook bets $300,000 into it. Steve makes it $1.2 million more, to make the bet $1.5 million total. Brook declares all-in. Steve calls. Brook shows KJo. Steve has QTo for an open-ended straight draw and a backdoor flush draw. This is it folks... Turn is a QUEEN! RIVER is a KING to give brook two pair, but Steve the straight. STEVE PAUL-AMBROSE WINS THE 2006 POKERSTARS CARIBBEAN ADVENTURE, EARNING $1,363,100.00 and a $25,000 WPT Championship seat!

Joining many other online success stories, Steve parlayed a $22 turbo satellite buy in into a payday of over $1.3 million and a WPT Championship entry.
