Lee Nelson

2006 Aussie Millions Poker Champion

Lee Nelson started playing poker at the age of five, and has continuously improved his game since then. He is nicknamed "Final Table", and it is a nickname that he has earned by appearing at around 50 final tables in large poker tournaments in his career. Nelson was born in the United States, but now resides in New Zealand and travels the world to play in many poker tournaments.

Poker Activities and Hobbies

Nelson teamed up with Blair Rodman to author a widely popular poker book titled "Kill Phil: The Fast Track to Success in No-Limit Hold'em Poker Tournaments." It quickly became one of the best selling poker titles available and received excellent reviews, including a positive one from Mason Malmuth of Two plus Two fame, and quite an accomplished author as well. The books main focus is preparing novice poker players to compete against professional poker players in a tournament setting.

Lee Nelson also acts as the poker expert and co-host of Joker Poker, an Australian television show. It is a popular Australian TV show where comedians compete against other comedians in high stakes poker. The show is designed to increase donations to charities, as the winners are awarded money for their favorite charity.

Nelson spends his free time away from the poker table swimming, walking, weight training and meditating.

2006 Aussie Millions Poker Championship

Nelson, a regular on the Australasian poker tournament circuit, has won Seven Card Stud and Speed poker championships during the 2005 Crown Australian Poker Championship, but his biggest win was at the 2006 Aussie Millions Poker Championship. During the multi tournament event, Lee made an amazing five final tables.

The Aussie Millions is the world's largest non-US based poker tournament. Nelson outlasted a field of 417 players in the final to take home the first place prize of over 1.4 million.

Once the action got down to two players, Nelson sat across from US player Robert Neary. The final hand of the tournament started with Neary holding the 2 and 4 of clubs and Nelson holding the Jack and 5 of clubs. Once three clubs hit the board, both players got all in and the championship belonged to Nelson. As an interesting side note, the victory was on Lee's sixty-third birthday. What a birthday present!
