Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes is known as the "Godfather of Costa Rican Poker". Humberto has two World Series of Poker Bracelets to his credit and has cashed at countless other major tournaments.
Brenes is easily recognized at the table by his colourful personality and clothing. If by chance you can't spot his bright wardrobe, then just listen for the singing and it is sure to lead you right to Humberto, who always has a song for his tablemates. This mixture of colour and charisma has made Humberto one of the fan favourites to watch on televised events.
In 2002, Humberto Brenes won the Jack Binion World Poker Open in Tunica, Mississippi. This win earned him over $500,000. 1993 was also a good year for Humberto Brenes, a year in which he won two World Series of Poker bracelets, one in Limit Hold Em and one in Pot Limit Omaha. In addition to Humberto's bracelets he has also gotten close many times with a number of WSOP final tables, including a number of 2nd place finishes, and even a 4th place finish in the main event in 1988. Humberto has done just as well in the World Poker Tour with a 2nd place at the 2004 championship event that earned him $923,475, a 3rd place finish at the 2004 World Poker Finals that earned him another $636,930, and two other WPT top ten finishes to his credit. Overall, Humberto has won nearly $5 million playing tournament poker and shows no signs of slowing down.
Away from the poker table Brenes has led a varied life and this successful businessman has been involved in many different ventures. In the past Brenes has owned everything from the local Univision Television station, to a construction company, to a number of restaurants. Currently he owns a nut company in Costa Rica, although much of his time is taken up travelling to the various big buy-in tournaments that he plays every year.
