Like others who later made the switch to poker, US pro David Williams got his first taste of competitive tournament action by playing Magic: The Gathering. He played on the pro Magic circuit as a student, but soon discovered a new game that would change his life. Since then he’s gone on to become one of the most popular and successful players the tournament game has ever seen.

After winning his seat via a PokerStars online qualifier, David exploded onto the live tournament scene when he came within touching distance of winning the WSOP* Main Event in 2004. He eventually finished in 2nd place, good for a huge cash of $3,500,000, but it was a heartbreaking experience to come so close and fall at the last hurdle. Nevertheless, David bounced back and began to build an incredible run of major wins and final table appearances that shows no sign of stopping. Just months after the World Series, he finished 2nd for $573,800 at the WPT Borgata Poker Open, and then scored a win in a World Poker Classic side event for another $121,057. Next up came two more WPT final tables in 2006, the first being a 4th place worth $280,000 at the Bay 101 Shooting Stars event, followed by 4th place again, this time at the WPT Mirage Poker Showdown for $221,958.
The year 2006 was also when David finally found the World Series win he’d been looking. He bagged his first bracelet with victory in a $1,500 Stud event, besting an elite field to take home the title and $163,118. Just days later he almost won bracelet number two, when he played the $5,000 2-7 Draw Lowball tournament and finished as runner-up for $256,091. He’s made several other World Series final tables since, along with a string of other tournament results that include wins at the Bellagio Cup and on Poker After Dark, worth a combined total of more than $260,000. David also added that elusive WPT title to his collection in 2010 when he took down the $25,000 Championship for prize money of $1,530,537. He has also won big in tournaments online, and took victory in a mixed game event held as part of the 2009 World Championship of Online Poker for $107,800.
When not playing poker, you can still find David playing at Magic: The Gathering events and against friends. He also collects trainers, and likes watching TV and travelling. David plays as a member of Team PokerStars Pro and competes online with the user ID ‘dwilliams’.
