Bill Chen

When David Sklansky refers to a player as the most intelligent poker player he knows, it is a safe bet that you are dealing with an exceptional individual. That is exactly what Sklansky has said about Bill Chen, so maybe his success at the World Series of Poker should not be any great surprise. What success you ask?

Bill Chen surprised the world (although we already noted that we should have seen this coming) by winning both the $3,000 Limit Hold Em event as well as the $2,500 short-handed No Limit Hold Em event. Not to be confused with a one trick ‘Hold Em' pony (although Limit Hold Em and No Limit Hold Em are different enough disciplines as it is), Bill has also cashed in a variety of other games at the World Series including Lowball, Omaha, and Stud. Bill applies his mathematical and game theory derived game plan in a variety of different games and the results speak for themselves. Bill has joined very elite company by winning two bracelets and was one of only two players to win multiple bracelets during the 2006 World Series of Poker.

Before setting the poker world on fire at the World Series of Poker in 2006, Bill studied Mathematics at UC Berkeley. This is where he first started applying his knowledge of mathematics towards poker. After graduating in 1999, Chen took a job at SIG, a financial trading company that encourages a healthy interest in poker among its traders and employees. Chen was able to continue working on poker theories and strategies while also working on quantitative models for finance.

More recently, Chen was introduced to a new audience of poker fans when he made his debut on the infamous US television show "High Stakes Poker". A cash game, with the minimum buy-in set at $100,000, High Stakes Poker often attracts some of the best players in the world. On the show Chen butted heads with poker stars like Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreaunu, Mike Matusow, Daniel Alaei, and Jamie Gold.

His first book, written with fellow player Jerrod Ankenman (who has a 2nd place WSOP finish to his credit) was released in 2006 and is bound to help many players improve their games. Their book, The Mathematics of Poker, covers game theory, optimum and exploitive play, and other mathematical related topics.

Bill Chen is now a proud member of Team PokerStars.
