Before he became one of the biggest names in world poker, Barry Greenstein studied computer science at university in Illinois, followed by a PhD in maths. He had plans to pursue a career in the software industry, but these were ditched when he realised how much money was at stake for anyone with enough skills at the poker table.
In fact, Barry was already making so much money from poker that he was able to retire from regular working life all together and dedicate his life to making it as a pro. Considering the fact he is now one of the highest-earning players of all time, it’s a career move that has certainly paid off, and there are few active pros with a list of major title wins and cashes as long as Barry’s. He’s made numerous World Series of Poker* final tables since 2006, including winning three bracelets. The first came in 2004 when he took down a $5,000 2-7 Draw event for $296,200, followed by another victory a year later, this time in a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha tourney, a win good for $128,505. Bracelet number three came in 2008 with a $157,619 win in a $1,500 Razz tournament. Other World Series highlights include back-to-back final tables in the prestigious $50,000 HORSE event, worth a combined total of more than $550,000.
Barry has also won big on the World Poker Tour, including victory at the World Poker Open in 2004 for a huge cash of $1,278,370. There have also been wins at several WPT invitational events plus other final tables that have seen him earn more than $2,400,000 since Season 1. In addition to his tournament success, Barry is also a feared cash game expert and has made regular appearances on major TV shows like The PokerStars Big Game and High Stakes Poker.
Barry is known for his generosity, and has often donated large chunks of his tournament earnings to charities close to his heart, especially organisations that help children. He is also a writer, and famously gives away a signed copy of his poker book ‘Ace on the River’ to the person that busts him from any live tournament.
Truly deserving of the label ‘poker legend’, Barry Greenstein has achieved almost everything there is to achieve in poker, but he’s still hungry for more. He is a Team PokerStars Pro and completes online with the user ID ‘barryg1’.
