Poker Glossary
Tell - A term that refers to any clue a player may give about the strength of their hand, either physical or verbal.
Tilt - A player can be described as being on ‘tilt’ if they are playing in a way that they know isn’t effective, calling with weak hands or bluffing too much.
Top Pair - Refers to when a player pairs one of their hole cards with the highest card on the flop.
Top Set - Refers to when a player makes three of a kind, with the highest card on the flop being part of the three.
Trips - Another name for three of a kind.
Turn - Also referred to as 4th Street, the turn is the fourth community card dealt in games like Hold’em and Omaha.
Under the Gun - The name given to the player sitting to the left of the big blind, and therefore the one to act first, on the initial betting round.
Underdog - Used to describe a player with a hand that is significantly behind that of their opponent, and therefore not the favorite to win the hand.
Value - If a player has a strong hand and is confident they have their opponent beat, they can make a ‘value’ bet, which they hope their opponent will call.
Variance - Refers to a method of measuring swings in a player’s game and bankroll, by calculating profit and loss over a period of time.
