Poker Glossary
Pay Off - When a player calls a hand that they are behind on, they are said to ‘pay off’ their opponent.
Play the Board - If a player decides to ‘play the board’; it means they are deciding to use all five community cards to make their hand.
Pocket - Another name to describe a player’s hole cards.
Pocket Pair - Used mainly in Hold’em, a pocket pair refers to when a player has a pair in their hole cards.
Post - This refers to the process of ‘posting’ blinds or antes, i.e. paying them when it’s your turn to do so.
Pot-Limit - In poker games being played as pot limit, a player can only bet an amount equal to the size of the pot.
Pot Odds - This refers to calculations that can be made, to determine how much money a player can potentially win in the pot, based on how much they will have to invest in order to do so.
Quads - Nickname given to a four of a kind hand.
Ragged - The name given to a flop, in games like Hold’em, that looks as though it hasn’t improved anyone’s hand.
Rainbow - If a flop features cards of different suits, and therefore does not present any obvious flush draws, it is said to be a ‘rainbow’ flop.
Raise - If a player decides to raise, they are choosing to match the current bet and increase it by a greater amount.
Rake - A small percentage of each pot in a real money cash game, taken away as revenue by the card room.
Represent - A strategical move, where a player plays as though they have a big hand, especially one involving a high card dealt on the flop.
Ring Game - Another name for a cash game, or any poker game that isn’t a tournament.
River - Also referred to as 5th Street, the river is the final community card dealt in games like Hold’em and Omaha.
Rock - Nickname given to an extremely tight player, one that tends only to enter a pot if they have a big hand.
Runner - A phrase used to describe cards dealt on the turn and river, which help the player to make their hand.
