Poker Glossary
Kicker - The name given to a card used to determine who has the winning hand, if two players make the same pair.
Maniac - The name given to a player that makes huge raises and bets, often regardless of what hand they have. Although an ultra-aggressive style of play is often a winning strategy, a ‘Maniac’ is not usually a good player.
Muck - The muck is the pile into which all cards that have been folded go into.
No-Limit - Refers to poker games where players can bet and raise as many of their chips as they want, including all they have in front of them.
Nuts - Phrase used to describe a hand that is unbeatable by any other player.
Offsuit - Refers to hole cards that are not of the same suit.
Open-Ended Straight Draw - A hand where a player has four connecting cards, needing one more, at either end, in order to hit their straight.
Out - An out is a card that will improve a player’s hand, helping them to win the pot.
Overcard - A board card that has a higher rank than others, especially those in a players hole cards.
