Family Pot - A term used to describe a pot where several players call, before the flop.

Fast - If a player is described as playing ‘fast’, they will tend to play aggressively, by making frequent bets and raises.

Flop - The first three community cards to be dealt, in games like Hold’em and Omaha.

Fold - If a player folds, they are choosing to take no further part in the hand, and must return their cards to the dealer. They can win no money from the pot, and also lose any amount they have already invested.

Gutshot Straight - Another name for an inside straight. If a player has hole cards of 6-7, and there is a 3 and 4 on the flop, the player has a ‘Gutshot straight draw’. If a 5 comes on the turn or river, the player has hit their Gutshot.

Heads Up - The term used to describe situations when there are only two people left in a hand. Many poker tournaments are also played ‘heads up’, meaning that there are only two players, competing one on one.

Hit - To ‘hit’ means to be dealt the cards that you were looking for. If you have pocket 8’s and another 8 appears on the flop, you have ‘hit’ trip 8’s,

Hole Cards - Name given to the cards dealt face down to each player at the start of each hand.

Implied Odds - The name given to the odds of potentially hitting a hand, and the amount you stand to win if your cards hit. They are referred to as ‘implied’ because they are only an estimated calculation.

Inside Straight Draw - An inside straight refers to a hand where a player needs to hit a running card that will connect five cards to make a straight. Also see ‘Gutshot Straight’.
