How to Size Bets

Figuring out when to bet is really only part of the challenge. You also need to have an idea of how much to bet in order to accomplish the purpose(s) of making the bet in the first place. A wrongly-sized bluff won’t get the fold you desire. Nor will a value bet get a call if you haven’t bet an appropriate amount. What factors should you consider when deciding how to size your bets?

Betting and Pot Size

When speaking of bet amounts in no-limit Hold’em, the size of the bet is usually described in terms of its relation to the size of the pot. If preflop action creates a pot of $5 and the first bet after the flop is $5, we call that a “pot-sized” bet. It is this ratio between pot size and bet size that helps us determine whether a bet is “small,” “medium,” or “large.”

Any bet that is half the pot or less is considered “small.” Bets that are about two-thirds to three-fourths of the pot are “medium.” And “large” bets approach or even exceed the size of the pot. Thus, with a $5 pot, a $2 bet would be small, a $3.50 bet would be medium, and a $5 bet would be considered large.

Small Bets

In some cases, a small bet is all that is needed to accomplish your purpose for betting. Continuation bets (i.e. bets made by the preflop raiser after the flop) are often on the small side, especially if made with position. If I raise before the flop from late position and you call me from the big blind, then the flop comes A-x-x or K-x-x and you check, usually a small bet (e.g. 50% of the pot) will be enough to make you fold if you have missed the flop.

However, if I hit the flop and make my hand, and I want you to bet with what I think is your weaker hand, I will try to bet small enough to encourage you to call. For example, if I held AK in the above hand, and no obvious draws were on the board, a small “value bet” would be a good move, to extract more winnings or “value” from the hand.

Small bets can also be enough to win the hand as a bluff following “dry” or uncoordinated flops that are unlikely to have hit opponents’ hands, regardless of what you hold in your hand.

Medium Bets

However, there are times when a small bet isn’t going to work, like when you’re betting to protect your hand. Imagine that you have A-K, raise before the flop and get one caller, and the flop comes Ah-9s-8h. Let’s say the pot is now $10 and gets checked to you, and you make a small bet of $2. An opponent holding J-10 or two hearts is often going to call that small bet in order to try to complete a draw. In other words, you haven’t protected your top pair of aces very well. A medium-to-large bet will have a better chance of getting your opponent to fold.

Large Bets

There are instances when large bets are preferable. Raises before the flop often have to be pot-sized or more in order to prevent too many callers coming along. After the flop, large bets are often in order if you’ve made a big hand like top two pair and want to make it too expensive for drawing hands to stick around. Sometimes large bets work best when bluffing, as you may make it too expensive for an opponent to stick around even with a good hand.

All of which is to say there are many strategic considerations when deciding on the right amount to bet. Think again about why you are betting, and consider carefully what amount is most likely to help you accomplish the purpose (or purposes) you have for doing so.
