Aussie Millions
PokerStars offers the best satellites for the southern hemispheres largest and most prestigious poker tournament. Although the tournament is officially named the Crown Australian Poker Championship, everyone knows the event as the Aussie Millions.
The buy-in for the event is $10,000 Australian (around $7,900 US) and satellites can be found by going to the "Events" section of the PokerStars lobby and then clicking on the "special" tab. Each prize package for the 2007 event was worth $10,000, which includes the $7,900 buy in as well as $2,100 spending money. As the 2008 event nears you can be sure that PokerStars will once again be offering the best satellites to be found anywhere, with more players and more seats given away.
2006 Event
Many top players, such as Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein and Daniel Negreaunu made the trip to Crown Casino in Melbourne to play the event in 2006. Joe Hachem was also in the field, making his triumphant return to Australia after his 2005 World Series of Poker victory. Although many of the well known players made respectable showings, including a 13th place finish by Antonio Esfandiari, a 11th place finish by Cathy Leibert, and a 9th place finish by Kenna James, PokerStars player Lee Nelson walked away with the championship. Not only did Lee get the glory but he also won $1,295,800 for his efforts.
2007 Event
The top players again turned out for the 2007 Aussie Millions, and this time one of them was fortunate enough to walk away with the top prize. Gus Hansen, of WPT fame, and a regular participant in the highest cash games in the world, played fantastic poker and won the top prize of $1,500,000.
In addition to Gus Hansen, Andrew Black, Kristy Gazes, and Jimmy "Gobboboy" Fricke were at the final table. Early on "Gobboboy" had everyone in shell shock as he rode an incredible run of luck to a commanding chip lead. After busting Black in 3rd place, the heads up match started with Hansen at an almost a 4-1 chip disadvantage.
Hansen immediately went to work and before long, after a few massive pots, was the commanding chip leader himself. "Gobboboy" mounted one last comeback, retaking the chip lead with a miracle river card, but in the end Gus "Great Dane" Hansen was victorious and walked away with the championship and first place prize money of over $1,500,000.
Congratulations Gus Hansen!!!
